Safe, Injury-Free Tree Maintenance: Tips for DIY Work

Welcome to my blog. My name is Kerry, and I love to do DIY work around the home. While painting high ceilings and putting in garden beds seems to be easy for me, I find climbing into a tree with a saw to trim branches very scary and potentially dangerous. Luckily, over the years, I have gotten past the fear and have found ways to service my trees safely and efficiently without risking grave injury to myself. Sometimes, I admit that I have to call in the pros, but I'll help you identify when that's a necessity as well. Take a look at these posts. I hope they move, entertain and inform you.

5 Essential Tree Care and Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Trees Healthy

Blog

Trees enhance your property with shade and beauty, which increases your home value. To maintain their appeal, you need to understand how to care for the trees in your landscape, allowing them to have a long healthy life. Remember, caring for your trees starts with choosing the right tree for your yard or landscape. It then extends to ensuring it's healthy and free of disease. Use the following tips to provide adequate tree care for your trees.

Choosing the Right Tree

Tree care starts with choosing the right tree and planting it in the right spot to ensure it grows and thrives. Before you select a tree, you need to consider two important aspects: the location or planting site and purpose of the tree. Are you choosing a tree based on privacy, the shade it provides, windbreaking features, reducing erosion or purely for aesthetics? The answer to this question will narrow down to a number of trees based on their suitability.

The next consideration is the planting site and any limitations it may have. Is there enough space for the height and spread of the tree? What are the soil conditions and sun exposure? All this information will help you chose the right tree and care for it appropriately.

Watering When Young and During the Dry Season

When a tree is young and adapting to the new environment after being planted in your home, it's usually quite vulnerable. You need to water it consistently to ensure the water reaches down to the depth of the developing root system. The soil type will highly influence the water retention. Remember to keep in mind the soil type, as it'll help to determine how much water to give your tree.

Mulching Is Key

Mulch helps plants retain water by slowing down the rate of evaporation from the soil surface. It suppresses weeds, which can compete for nutrients and water in the soil. It also provides a slow-release fertiliser. What's more, mulch creates a buffer during hot and cold temperatures by protecting the roots and keeping them moist.

Observe Your Trees for Disease

While some trees might thrive when left alone, one critical way of caring for your trees is observing them regularly. This will ensure that you notice any changes in the tree. For instance, you should be able to notice any discolouration in a tree's leaves or bark. If you diagnose a tree early enough, it has a high chance of survival.

Knowing how your tree looks like when it's healthy will help you make the decision on when to call an arborist if your tree is ridden with disease.

Pruning Your Tree

Most trees don't require a lot of pruning. However, when you notice dead limbs, diseased limbs or stunted growth, it's a good time to call for tree service so that a professional can prune your trees. You should also call them if a tree has overgrown to a point where it may be dangerous to you and your property.

Being intentional about caring for your trees will give them a long life allowing you to enjoy the perks of fully grown trees in your yard.
